What to Expect when you stay with us
Tiger Rock is an artist’s private home. Located in 8 acres of jungle & backing onto 319 hectares of permanent forest reserve on the island of Pangkor, in the state of Perak, Malaysia. It is a tropical island & jungle retreat.
Tiger Rock promotes sustainable tourism, preserving the natural environment and cultural way of life, participation with the local community, mutual respect and benefits to all parties involved.
Depending on the time of the year, you will experience the various festivals that Malaysia celebrates.
Pangkor Island has a long history with a multicultural population of about 18,000 inhabitants. In many ways it is a microcosm of Malaysia as a whole. The island’s main industry is fishing & local tourism.
The centre of the island is permanent forest reserve & the island is home to various species of hornbills. We have a resident population of Great Hornbills at Tiger Rock.
What to expect…..
We provide you with Tiger Rock as your setting. Our location in the jungle & our accommodation is lovely. You will have your own private room with attached bathroom. This will have a work table. Fresh bedding is provided once a week. You are provided with basic toiletries, soap, shampoo etc. Your room is cleaned once a week. All rooms have aircons & fans, hot & cold water.
You will also be provided with a daily breakfast grocery basket of tea, coffee, fruit, milk, muesli, bread etc etc.
We do not provide any other meals & so you do need to budget in a certain amount of cost for meals outside. You are expected to go out & use what the island has to offer. It will give you a much broader experience if you are willing to go out & try out everything on the island.
Once settled, you will realise that it’s much more convenient, & tasty to eat out. Eating on the island is really inexpensive & the local food is fantastic.
Because of the local monkey population, all meals can only be prepared & served at the Pool House. All guests are expected to keep this in mind & clean up after themselves. Please do not leave any food hanging around.
The kitchens at Hill House & Main House are only suitable for making hot drinks, & there is a fridge, kettle etc for everyday use at any time. A fridge at the Pool House Is available for you to store your eg. canned drinks.
We will be setting up an order-in tiffin lunch or dinner menu. A limited menu will be offered & guests have to pre-order the day before & pay on delivery. All meals are served at the Pool House.
Please take note that we do not provide any commercial bottled water at Tiger Rock because of the huge single use plastic issue on the island. We have drinking water that is filtered & boiled available at the Pool House. Bring your own refillable bottles. Commercial bottled water is at your own cost.
Laundry service:
If you wish to have your bedding & towels changed more frequently, there will be a charge of RM40 to cover laundering fees for your set of sheets & towels.
For your personal clothes there is a self service launderette just in Pangkor Town. Pangkor Laundry House & a wash costs just RM3.
General House Rules:
- No smoking in the rooms & community work spaces.. Ask others before you smoke in any of the community open air areas.
- Meals & food can only be consumed in the Pool House. No eating or food storage in the rooms.
- Do not feed the monkeys or any other wildlife.
- Be aware of local customs & when out in public please so kindly dress more conservatively.
- Absolutely no illegal drugs will be tolerated on the property. The possession of illegal drugs carries the most serious consequences in Malaysia.
Wifi:
Is only provided at the Pool House.
Mobile service is pretty good all around Tiger Rock, although there can be some inconsistency.
If you want to purchase mobile data, Celcom is the best company to use on the island. SIM cards can be purchased on the island.
What happens once you arrive:
We pick you up from the island ferry terminal & take you to Tiger Rock. You are introduced to your room & spaces & give you a briefing about being in the jungle environment.
Once you are settled in, we will introduce you to the island. Is it small & easy to navigate. There is a huge range of readily available & very affordable restaurants, grocery shops etc & we will introduce you to these so that you can then feel comfortable moving around the island & enjoying what it has to offer.
We wish for our guests to contribute more directly to the local island community.
We will gently guide you through the island culture & its everyday economy & workings. The fishing jetties, the temples, the different areas & the do’s & don’t’s of being on an island of mixed cultures. Please bear in mind that Malaysia is a Muslim country. It is always wise & good to remember to have a sarong or a loose shirt/dress to pull over your shorts or bikini when moving around off the beach.
Most people speak English so communication is really not a problem.
Getting Around the Island:
We have a couple of bicycles that you can borrow if they are available.
If you want more independence, motorbikes can be hired. We can advise which provider is best to use; but the responsibility & risk is yours . Always wear a helmet. Be warned that you have to be extremely careful riding around the island as the taxi vans & cars do drive at speed.
Taxi vans can be called in for pick up & return trip, & the rates are reasonable.
Walking from Tiger Rock into Pangkor town:
To the Pangkor Ferry Terminal & high street: +-25 minutes
To Sungei Pinang Besar(SPB): +-40 minutes
To Sungei Pinang Kechil(SPK main fishing village): +-50 minutes
Ways to get to Pangkor Island & costs you need to know:
Tiger Rock is an island, on the west coast of Malaysia. You need to take a ferry from the mainland.
Buses to Lumut:
There are buses from all the main cities ( KL/Penang/Ipoh) to the town of Lumut from where you get the ferry to Pangkor Island. The bus station is just across the street from the ferry terminal.
If you want to use the marina island ferry, you will need to get a taxi from the bus station in Lumut.
Local Pre-booked taxi/car:
Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Lumut/ Marina island: From +-RM750 (GBP 141) one way.
Penang to Lumut/Marina island From +-RM600 (GBP113) one way
Ipoh to Lumut/Marina island From +-RM350 (GBP 66) one way
Ferry from mainland to Pangkor Island:
2 ferry terminal locations: Lumut town( 25 minutes ferry trip) or Marina Island (10 Minutes ferry trip)
You have to buy a return ticket from either location to Pangkor Island.
